Let me start by saying that I am NOT an artist, never have been, never will be. I can copy things (like henna designs, etc.) but to actually put pencil to paper and have it look like a live being....? I never thought it was possible! I definitely struggled and most of my pictures don't even look like dogs but I had SO much fun doing all the timed activities and I learned some really good basics that with enough practice, I might actually be able to draw a true likeness of my dogs!!!! Lili was engaging and fun and I'm so grateful to Grisha Stewart School for providing this session!

This is a brilliant webinar both for those who can draw and those who think they can't. Lili guides you through all the key elements of how to draw a dog and gives you lots of practice along the way. I discovered that I could actually draw - it's basic but I could do it. There's nothing like challenging yourself to try something different!

I consider myself fairly well skilled at drawing but going back to the basics always reminds me how much I have forgotten or still have to learn. Very enjoyable session. I was skeptical how it would flow with so many students attending via Zoom... but it was fine! I hope there will be more offerings with Lili Chin in the future.

So much good information in this course, I can't wait to watch the recording and do it all over again! I have loved Lili's work for a long time, so it was great to see behind the scenes on her process. I can already see my own progress in the short time that we had in the course, so I am excited to keep drawing and improving, the course set a great foundation to continue working from.

I found the webinar absolutely delightful! It took me back to Drawing 101 in college, and reminded me of my early animation days... Pros: engaging, interesting, insightful. It's not every day you get to see inside of an artist's head. I could tell people were fascinated to learn what artists know as skill, but outsiders see as magic. The back chaining you did by starting with contours was a really good idea! The fact that you ran out of time means people are itching for more. I myself would be interested in continuing lessons. The practice is invaluable! Cons: You may have spent too much time on the initial contour drawing. I understand the principle, but most people aren't yet invested enough to be that diligent. Then, once we got to Gestures, I felt the pacing was a little quick for the average beginner because I myself was struggling to keep up! I think some longer gestures before the 20 second ones would have been an easier transition. But again, it was hard to fit everything in, I think you did a great job considering!!! You ran out of time :( So you didn't get to show everyone how you can use the skills from contour to pick out details and find patches of color and shading. But again, it just made me want more. So.. is it really a con? I think perhaps in the future you should find a way to draw live on the call, so people can watch the process in real-time. Besides, that's what's so magical about animators. we can draw a strong pose in like 10 seconds. Show 'em what you've got!!

I really enjoyed this webinar. It was informative and fun and I learnt lots of things that I plan to use with the children that I teach. It was surprising how much information you can get down in 20 seconds when we were doing the quick sketches. I'm looking forward to drawing lots more dogs. Thanks again.

“Life Drawing” With Your Pup as the Model!

Lili Chin is one of the most famous illustrators of dog behavior and training. Ask any dog trainer around the world, and they'll likely recognize her prolific work from all over, including my BAT book. Her accessible little Doggie Language book is already a staple in dog trainer's toolbars.

In this unique online seminar, Lili will introduce you to a few art exercises which will help you see your dog in a new light. You don't need to have drawn anything before. There is no right or wrong way to do this and you will not be judged or critiqued. This is a safe space to let your artistic self go!

What you need:
* Two photos of your dog
* A real live dog, if possible
* Something to draw with (pencil, tablet stylus, pen )
* Something to draw on (paper on a pad, or digital tablet)

The live session is on Tuesday, November 2 at 10 am to noon (also Election Day in the US). The session will also be recorded for registered students to view afterwards.

  • Suitable for everyone. No previous art experience required. Seriously! Tell your internal critic that you can do this.

  • Learn to see lines, shapes, spaces, pose, & action.

  • Have fun looking at your dog in new ways and capturing what you see on paper.

  • To get started; Lili will first demonstrate how to draw from objects and images which are not your dog; just to get those creative juices flowing!

  • Handouts, and video recording for you to reference .

  • Please note that this is not a course for producing photorealistic portraits of your dog.

  • Signing up for a lot of online courses? Save some money! Diamond Members get ALL webinars and courses in the school for one low rate.

  • We also have a Library Pass which lets you stream this course and a lot of other pre recorded content. Find out more on the Library Pass Page.

About the Instructor

Illustrator, Author

Lili Chin

Before illustrating her own wildly popular Doggie Language dog behavior book, artist Lili Chin was already well-known for co-creating the Warner Bros hit animated series "Mucha Lucha" and her fantastic dog art. She’s the illustrator for my BAT book and Ahimsa Dog Training Manual.

Lili's dog illustrations have been used by dog trainers in books, educational programs, and even a World Health Organization dog bite prevention campaign. A partial list of prominent behaviorists, authors, and organizations that have used her dog art include Dr. Sophia Yin, Fear Free Pets, RSPCA, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and her viral Doggie Language poster has been translated into many different languages and is used by dog rescues and shelters around the world.

Lili's story and work have been featured on websites ranging from Dogster and The Dodo, to the American Geographical Society and Scientific American. She also manages DoggieDrawings.net, an online shop of her stylized prints and gift products. Lili's inspiration is Boogie, her rescued blue-eyed Boston Terrier (12.11.04 - 10.20.20). She currently lives in Los Angeles with a growing collection of boardgames.

What a nice option to offer dog professionals! The approach she took worked very well in an online environment. While the exercises had me a bit squirmy and out of my comfort zone, I learned some great tips and approaches on trying to draw dogs! I'm appreciative of the ability to go back and review the video and will keep practicing! I loved the different types of body language images that were used and definitely will work to hone my skills in noticing subtle body positions and direction of movement etc. LOVE LOVE LOVE. When is part 2?!
