I requested entry to this class as I've had primitive breeds my whole life. I have friends with modern breeds who give me tips on training that do not work with these breeds, at least not in the traditional way. So it was rewarding and refreshing to hear this from someone who has professionally gone into the field to address these types of dogs. I also learned about a whole new field that I am super interested in. Will recommend the course to my friends as well.

Thank you so much for this live presentation. The slide presentation was clear, concise and well organized. And, Molly makes the science fun! We share our home with 3 "primitive" breed dogs. I feel like they are better communicators than my previous canine housemates. It was nice to hear the experts give reasons behind that.

This is an awesome webinar! The hosts clearly laid out well-researched, detailed information about primitive dogs and how they work. As a primitive dog enthusiast, this makes me very happy, especially seeing trainers in the West being open to educating others about these wonderful dogs. I'm Vietnamese, wasborn and raised in a country where primitive landrace dogs are the norm, and it touched my heart in a way that those who don't live in cultures and area that are majorly inhabited by primitive dogs often don't as deeply affected as I did. Great job!

It's true! Primitive breeds make up the majority of dogs living on earth!

Even if they are not the majority of dogs you see in your home country, Primitive Breeds far outnumber other breeds on a world wide basis, yet they are incredibly misunderstood.

Because these unique breeds don't fit the mold of the more domesticated dog breeds, labels start flying such as cat-like, dramatic, untrainable, lazy, uncooperative, stubborn, or aggressive. In reality, relationships with primitive breeds of dogs can be some of the most informative and rewarding.

Join dog trainer and anthrozoologist Molly Sumridge, CBATI, as she walks you through what cohabitation with Primitive dogs looks like and how to navigate training scenarios to keep these dogs coming back for more - over and over again.

Recorded live November 17 2021.

  • Suitable for professional dog trainers and veterinarians, as well as families with dogs.

About the Instructor

Dog Behavior Consultant & Anthrozoologist

Molly Sumridge MS, CDBC, CPDT-KSA, CBATI-KSA, CWRI, CFE, CFT

Molly Sumridge is a dog behavior consultant focused on primitive dogs, and behavior modification for dog sports and pet aggression. She is also an anthrozoologist studying human-animal relations and relationships specific to domestication, primitive/ancient dogs, non-traditional companion animal relationships, and dog sports.

Molly leads the canine program in the Carroll College Anthrozoology department, in which students train and care for foster dogs during the academic year. Her courses focus on training, canine ecology, cross-cultural human-canine relationships and conflicts, working dogs, and critical analysis of human-animal interactions and relationships. When she is not teaching or consulting she is up to her eyeballs in research working on her PhD in Anthrozoology, focused on the impact of labels on dogs, specifically New Guinea singing dogs.

While the intersection of all things human and non-human animal is her love and her life, Molly grounds herself through her loving husband, calamitous cat, patient parrot, spicy snakes, a flock of charming chickens, and a cast of colorful canine characters.

I live with a pair of Great Pyrenees and it's always fascinating to watch them putting their livestock guardian skills to work in their house pet lives. This was a fabulous discussion of why such dogs need to be met on their own terms and not expected to be the stereotypical Golden Retriever that instantly bonds, loves, and is malleable. Practical advice and great examples in equal measure.

At 69 yrs old, my first dog is a Shiba Inu. Thought I had done all the research to know what I was getting, but turned out I didn’t. I found your information to be eye opening and all makes so much sense after spending a little over a year with this amazing boy. I made so many mistakes in the beginning due to the wrong advice and trainers who don’t understand this breed. I am so grateful he still seems to love me. I think my biggest take-away is that I need to listen to him better. Big OMG moment was your example of not wanting to follow instruction in front of the soccer game, but doing it at the car with no one around and doing it on his own, so my Max, then that look that says, ok. I did it, now where is my treat? lol. I am sure there will be more as my brain has more time to digest the info, and after I watch the video a few more times. I literally just finished my first listen and these are my first reactions. Thank you for this.
