Improving Animal Welfare & Honing Trainers’ Skills

A typical debate about negative reinforcement is a bit like a train wreck: You know you should maintain speed and drive past it but you just can’t help slowing down to satisfy your curiosity. Recent interest in basic research on negative reinforcement sets the occasion to check our understanding of why animals need trainers who support the least intrusive principle for selecting behavior-change procedures.

This principle doesn't preclude the use of negative reinforcement per se; rather, it limits the use of negative reinforcement when it isn't necessary, i.e., when positive reinforcement-based procedures may be equally efficient and effective. All professions have ethical guidelines — that part of applied practice that science doesn’t (indeed can’t) address. And many of them adhere to the least intrusive principle, e.g., special education, mental health, medicine and law.

  • Learn about the well-known "Procedural Hierarchy" from the author.

  • Learn how to choose the most ethical procedure to change animal behavior.

  • Ideal for professionals - this is a technical talk. It's science-based and should be accessible to most trainers.

  • BONUS: Recording of an “unplugged” Q&A session. Due to the storms on 9/8, the original date, we couldn't do the full presentation, but attendees were able to ask Dr. Friedman questions!

  • Recording of a live webinar broadcast.

  • Included with Diamond Membership (see below).

  • We also have a Library Pass which lets you stream this course and a lot of other pre recorded content. Find out more on the Library Pass Page.

How Do Professionals Choose Which Procedure to Use?

What does "least" intrusive mean and how do I know?

  • Do No Harm

It can be hard to judge the appropriateness of common 'dog training' strategies because they have been suggested to caregivers so often, for so long.

The good news is that science and ethics can help us make sense of this puzzle.

  • 2.5 Hour Recording of a Live Webinar

Susan is one of those speakers that I never get tired of hearing. Her words are well-crafted works of art, designed to help us think our way out of the cultural fog surrounding much of dog training.

  • Bonus Material

You'll get the webinar video, supporting handouts to help you understand the material more thoroughly.

Also includes a recording of an hour and a half of Q&A with Dr. Friedman.

The title is not even getting close to the richness of Dr. Susan Friedman's Webinar. It started of with basics and then dived into the deep end of behavior, seasoned with videos and experiences, citations of fellow behaviorists and scientists. This webinar is containing so much and tense information that I will listen to it a few times more to discover all the treasure in it. "Freedom is the competency to use behavior well."

One of the best presentations among this site's offerings. Dr. Friedman's soothing voice and benign message are compelling and touching without being remotely sentimental. She brings academic findings and life experience to bear on practical training problems in an elegant way. Long webinar, but time well spent. Excellent speaker!

A very mature, deep and to the point Q&A session! I am thankful to those who posed their questions and to Susan for answering them in such a deep and meaningful way. Apart from referring to particular concepts and methods, Susan has taken me on a mentoring tour rather than on a teaching seminar, where knowledge and skills are paired with attitude and values. I truly recommend it and am looking forward to more :-) Grisha, thank you for making such a valuable meeting across the continents possible.
