Turn dog reactivity into confident mindfulness, step-by-step.

Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) is a unique, organic, empowering technique to help dogs find their way from reactivity to resilience. The BAT 101 class has video and written explanations of the BAT technique, along with six assignments to practice at your own pace and consolidate what you've learned.

This course is an excellent guide to understanding the technique from the ground up. If you're a professional trainer or working with one, the structure in this course will set you up for success. It's a self-paced course, meant to take 6-12 weeks.

  • Barking, lunging, growling on walks.

  • Fighting with other dogs in the home.

  • Avoiding or shutting down around people or dogs.

  • Biting or barking at people.

  • Also useful for socializing PUPPIES and all dogs!

Your hands-on guide to rehabilitate dog reactivity.

BAT builds appropriate social skills by encouraging a sense of safety.

  • What is BAT?

Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) is a practical technique and a philosophy. Polyvagal theory research indicates that mammals offer pro-social behavior when they feel safe.

BAT combines observation, long leash techniques, training scenarios, and survival skills for real life.

  • Who is this for?

Anyone who wants to work on dog reactivity is welcome to take this course. While it's great for professional dog trainers, it's also simple enough for non-professionals to follow along.

Each of the 6 major sections has a Pause to Practice with activities to help you and your dog learn.

2 CCPDT CEUs, 2 IAABC CEUS

  • More Help

For biting/fighting: if you aren't a dog trainer, I recommend you hire a CBATI or local positive trainer familiar with BAT to work with you during this course.

BAT made a difference counterconditioning alone did not

Charlie Hackenbruch

Blaze is my crossover dog, and reading the original BAT book was a part of my crossover journey. I started trying to teach my dog to self soothe - and I started seeing that in the weekly socialization group I was going to for my dog training apprenticeship, dogs were being corrected - corrected lightly and gently, but still corrected - for sniffing and exploring instead of focusing. BAT made a tremendous improvement in my reactive dog that desensitization and counter conditioning alone did not. So after I turned to training with aversive tools because I wasn't finding success with positive training, Behavior Adjustment Training gave me success I wasn't getting using a balanced approach, and brought me back to positive training. Blaze is 7 now and in many ways is the easiest dog in my house.

BAT is a way of life

Bernardina Marriott

After years of being a know it all.. Kimmy found me..she was very very frightened, reactive, and just not loving life...but there was something there .. the bond between us was there from the start.. I got Kimmys confidence and trust in me.. but there was always something just not right... still not a happy pup.. Then at dog school our trainer had been to a seminar and Grisha was there talking about a 'new way of letting the dogs work things out for themselves,'.. This opened my eyes... found YouTube clips, read the book.. and slowly every so slowly this little wonder dog started to shine.. As well as I did and still doing.. BAT to me is a way of life. For all living things... If we just open our eyes.. watch.. feel relaxed.. and willing to learn the world will open up... Thanks Grisha from me and Kimmy and all the other dogs that you have helped...

Really calming

I’m fairly new to BAT, but this is the little guy I’m using for all my practice, Ziggy! Came out of a bad situation and fearful of everything, but really calming with the BAT work

Transformed my dog's life

Liz Mitchell

It was many years ago, but your first book helped transform my dog's life. He had lived in a world of fear, but BAT helped him get used to so many things. He was never fully happy with other dogs, unless he knew then well, but he was able to go out for walks on a long line and have fun in his life.

I'm a collaborative dog trainer, author, international presenter, singer-songwriter, and keynote speaker of European ancestry (best guess based on DNA and some genealogy is Scotland, "England & Northwestern Europe," Wales, "Germanic Europe," Ireland, and Norway). I've been helping people and dogs professionally since 2003. My passion projects are grief tending, community singing, and woodturning.

I'm fascinated by animal behavior (including humans), somatic awareness, spirituality, psychology. My work is directed at wholehearted living for all beings, including dogs with a history of aggression, frustration, or fear as well as puppies and my other favorite species: humans.

My Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT 2.0 book and BAT 3.0) is used worldwide to help dogs gain confidence and social skills. Well over 200,000 people have learned about BAT so far.

Diane Redding and I co-host a podcast called The Lesson is Love.

As an outgoing introvert, I refresh my batteries by singing, expressing grief in community, and savoring life with my husband (Tom), Labrador (Joey), cat (Garbanzo aka "Adventure Kitty" and "Baby Panther"), and Little Brown Dog (Zuki). I identify as a queer (pansexual), neurodiverse, middle age, white, raised in poverty and now of middle class, and US citizen, spiritual non-Christian leaning toward neo-Druid (but raised in Christian culture). My pronouns are she/her. I am still wrestling with living on the stolen river watershed of the Siuslaw people, who are part of the CTCLUSI.

This was a great a course. I have used this program on 3 different occasions to successfully assist dogs with their reactivity. I am looking forward to continue to develop this understanding to help with dogs at our local humane society. I’m adding to my first review. Because of Covid, I think, I am getting a lot more calls for dogs dealing with reactivity. I am coming back to BAT to help them. I’m so grateful for Grisha for this tool that I can return to when I need it.

I have been a long time student of BAT ( pretty much when it started) and was one of the first earn the CBATI certification in 2012. I am constantly reviewing what I can do better and what I am doing well when it comes to BAT in general. The fact that this is a great place to review all of the foundations of BAT keeps me learning and refreshed no matter how much I am practicing and working with Clients. Thank you again Grisha for bringing this to the world of dogs and people.

I started looking into getting my fear-reactive dog some help about 3 years ago and was quickly overwhelmed by all the mixed information on what to do. I came across BAT 2.0 in an online forum, bought the book and things just made sense. Eventually I figured that I might as well take the online course as well to make sure that I'm doing things correctly. BAT has improved the quality of our walks and my doggo can make more peaceful decisions by himself in a lot of situations. He has come a long way and I truly appreciate the shift of mindset this course offers. I also work as a pet sitter/dog walker and come across lots of other fear-reactive, frustrated, and aggressive dogs. Implementing the BAT skills I've acquired on walks helps keep us both safe while building a stronger bond. With all the lessons I've learned from this course and seeing how dogs can blossom I am seriously considering becoming a CBATI :) THANK YOU, Grisha!!!

Love the course and the technique so far! I've been working with positive training/reinforcement for about 1 year now and see great results, but my dog Siah is still reactive towards larger dogs and men in work gear. Have started practicing the approaches of BAT 2 weeks ago and I think it's really working for us! Of course we need more work (especially as we can't do 'real' set-ups due to lack of helpers/space), but we're getting into it and both Siah & I got much calmer already. Grisha explains this all very well, very good course!

The Course is really nice to read, even if you are not so good in english language. The Practice Lessons are super cool described and it makes absolutely sense to do them.
