It was a very engaging and informative webinar! Put the spot light on an area we (I) often miss! The human emotion involved for our clients when they are dealing with a reactive dog. Excellent information and new ways to reach out to the client to make sure they are getting their emotional needs met! And ours, as consultants.

I believe that supporting our human clients is even more important than "training" the dog. It's very stressful to be a caregiver to a dog that struggles with reactivity. Marissa Martino really dives deep into this topic and gives us so much to think about, and also provides ways that we can support our clients even more. So much good information, but more importantly, she has a lot of compassion and empathy for humans and dogs.

I could have left this seminar after the first 19 minutes already equipped with a seminar's worth of content to think about and work on. And the content ideas just kept coming. This material, as advertised, is supportive of our clients with reactive dogs. Additionally, there is a lot to support us as trainers of these dog/owner teams. And owners themselves will find a lot of ideas and acceptance in this discussion.

Big feelings come up when living and working with our reactive dogs. This webinar is fantastic at normalizing what we feel, understanding it, and giving actionable advice on how to navigate it to improve our and our dogs day to day lives. I really appreciated hearing how important it is to recognize and acknowledge neutral behavior not just focusing on achieving the next step of the training goal. Highly recommend this one!

Many trainers and behaviorists talk about supporting the human end of the leash, but as a reactive dog Mom and dealing with all those Big Feelings, I feel like Marissa really gets what we struggle with at the deepest level. I took away so much from this webinar and plan to watch it again, pause, and talk copious notes. I look forward to reading her book and listening to her podcast. Thanks to Marissa and Grisha for providing and presenting this.

Positive reinforcement training is still relatively new to a lot of dog guardians in my country, so being able to listen to a recording of this webinar, and learning from Marissa about how to ask questions, get curious, and support clients through their reactivity journey, has been invaluable to someone like me who is learning primarily through resources. Thank you so much, Grisha and Marissa and everyone on the Grisha Stewart School, for this opportunity.

I love training my own dogs but I'm not a dog trainer. However I found this webinar so impactful for life in general. I'm a dental hygienist and sometimes we see people who are disappointed by their lack of dramatic Improvement with regards to certain aspects of their oral health. Yesterday, when someone I saw hadn't made as much Improvement she had hoped, I was able to use Marisa's "celebrate" concept with her. I think that felt good for both of us. My goal is to stay positive, encourage and empower all the people that I see. I think using that word celebrate means a lot. Thank you

This webinar turned some of my own big feelings into good feelings. I watched it to better support clients through tough dogs, It seems everywhere I am turning that is what I am dealing with. What I learned though was so much more. I was missing a lot of compassion for myself in the process of helping clients with dogs who have big feelings, now I understand the importance of inclusion for all. I got way more, as usual, than expected!

When we support our clients, we get better results.

Living with and training a dog that reacts to their environment can stir up emotions for everyone involved. Clients often report feelings of being overwhelmed, scared, embarrassed, or frustrated. They may fear that they're inadequate or have unrealistic expectations when it comes to their dog’s behavior, themselves, and with the training process. Trainers may experience a range of emotions, as well.

No matter the technique you teach for dog reactivity, it's helpful if the client is feeling solid emotionally. Since this process is not linear for anyone, it’s important that we continually check in with our clients regarding their thoughts and expectations to make sure we’re all on the same page.

During this webinar, Marissa will discuss each of these common challenges in detail, and she’ll also offer solutions to support the overall process.

Recorded from a live online presentation in February 2022.

  • Suitable for all professional dog trainers, behaviorists, and veterinarians.

  • Not a trainer? While this is officially aimed at trainers who are working with dog reactivity clients, this will also be helpful for you.

  • Identify the 10 common challenges clients experience when working with dog reactivity.

  • Develop strategies to normalize these experiences for your clients.

  • Take away practical ways to support the overall emotional process.

  • On demand session. The webinar recording includes audience Q&A.

  • Get this course and a whole lot more for FREE when you become a Diamond Member! Learn more about Diamond Membership.

  • Recording Includes the Q&A

Marissa's excellent presentation was about an hour and 45 minutes. The recording also includes an additional 30 minutes of audience Q&A to help you further understand the material.

About the Instructor

I'm thrilled to welcome Marissa Martino to my Academy. Read on to learn why!

Certified Dog Behavior Consultant

Marissa Martino, CDBC, CTC

Marissa Martino is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). She began her career working with canine companions after attending the Academy for Dog Trainers in 2007. Shortly after, she developed her private practice, Paws & Reward. Her approach to positive dog training is evidence-based and rooted in applied behavioral science. She incorporates her Six Connection Principles when working with clients.

As a dog behavior consultant, Marissa believes that our relationship with our canine companions can be a window into how we relate to the world around us which allows us an opportunity to expand as individuals. This innovative, personal development approach is designed to help people cultivate self-awareness and intimacy in the relationship with their dog, themselves, and others. Marissa outlined this approach in her book: Human-Canine Behavior Connection: Building Better Relationships Through Dog Training. In The Paws & Reward Podcast, Marissa and her guests stop and reflect on behavior change, positive dog training, the human-canine bond, and the relationships with our loved ones!

In addition to Marissa’s private dog training practice, she had had the pleasure of working for three different animal shelters directing their behavior departments in CO & CA, the most recent being the Dumb Friends League.

For the last three years, she was the Community Liaison at the Dumb Friends League, offering animal shelters and rural CO communities the education and resources needed to expand their animal welfare impact. Marissa is currently the Board President of the Shelter Playgroup Alliance, offering education to shelter staff and volunteers to develop comprehensive enrichment programs to support the animals in their care.
