This Panel Discussion built on what the first round provided-candid, insightful thoughts/interpretations from experts (of varying specialties) on Lili Chin’s information illustrations and examples of using real life video and pictures. The dynamic presence and way the panelists interacted and built on their own thoughts took the experience to another level and left me wanting more (along with looking at things in ways completely new to me).

An animated discussion on the nuances of dog behavior

When Lili Chin’s hot new Doggie Language book came out, I immediately loved it (and so did everyone else I know). I saw that her book was going to really help a ton of family dogs, but I also thought it would be useful for people to hear what experienced trainers and behaviorists see when they look at it.

So the first Doggie Language: Panel Discussion was created and it was a run away success! Even before the webinar was over, we people started asking if we could do another one. Hence this webinar, Round 2!

And this time we also added dog trainer and shelter specialist Sue Sternberg (USA) to the line-up: author Lili Chin (USA), applied animal behaviorist Kathy Sdao (USA), dog training and behavior consultant Chirag Patel (UK), and me (Grisha Stewart). It was another informative and hilarious discussion, moderated by Claire Goyer (Spain).

It's now on-demand and you can purchase access directly (keep it forever) or attend this session (and all other classes on the site) FREE as a Diamond member. Recorded live August, 2021.

  • Suitable for professional dog trainers as well as families with dogs.

  • Includes body-language videos to put your book skills into practice.

  • Helpful to already have your own copy of the book, but not necessary. Please note that Lili Chin's Doggie Language book is not included, but we do stock it in the store.

  • Learn when dogs are happy, need space, and a lot more!

  • Author Lili Chin joined us via her illustrations and in the Q&A session after the panel discussion.

  • The live online session was recorded so you can stream at a time that suits you.

  • Signing up for a lot of online dog training? Diamond Members get ALL webinars and courses in the school for one low rate.

  • We also have a Library Pass which lets you stream this course and a lot of other pre recorded content. Find out more on the Library Pass Page.

FOUR sets of professional dog behavior eyes

to help you put these great illustrations into practice.

  • Clear illustrations

Lili's book shows tail position, movement, expression, and so much more.

We've hand-selected the drawings that we think would be most helpful to see through a professional's eyes. Panelists sharing videos and photos of real dogs help you learn even more.

  • Interactive Live Webinar

Body language from experts with decades of experience from multiple species, around the world.

About 2.5 hours of discussion followed by 30 minutes of Q&As where you can ask about body language!

  • Bonus Material

If you miss anything live, don't worry!

The video recording of the whole panel discussion, including the Q&A at the end, will be in your course player soon after the session ends.

Meet the Expert Panelists

Illustrator, Author

Lili Chin

Before illustrating her own wildly popular Doggie Language dog behavior book, artist Lili Chin was already well-known for co-creating the Warner Bros hit animated series "Mucha Lucha" and her fantastic dog art. She’s the illustrator for my BAT book and Ahimsa Dog Training Manual.

Lili's dog illustrations have been used by dog trainers in books, educational programs, and even a World Health Organization dog bite prevention campaign. A partial list of prominent behaviorists, authors, and organizations that have used her dog art include Dr. Sophia Yin, Fear Free Pets, RSPCA, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and her viral Doggie Language poster has been translated into many different languages and is used by dog rescues and shelters around the world.

Lili's story and work have been featured on websites ranging from Dogster and The Dodo, to the American Geographical Society and Scientific American. She also manages DoggieDrawings.net, an online shop of her stylized prints and gift products. Lili's inspiration is Boogie, her rescued blue-eyed Boston Terrier (12.11.04 - 10.20.20). She currently lives in Los Angeles with a growing collection of boardgames.

Dog Trainer & Shelter Dog Specialist

Sue Sternberg

Sue has been working in shelters and as a dog trainer since 1981. Sue was the 2016 recipient of the APDT's Lifetime Achievement Award. She founded the shelter featured in the HBO documentary: Shelter Dogs. Her over 40 years of canine behavior experience includes as a dog control officer, behavior consultant at the ASPCA, shelter owner, successful competitor in a variety of dog sports, and a teacher of dog trainers world-wide. She has published many books and DVDs on all aspects of dog behavior, training and assessments, available through www.Dogwise.com and www.TawzerDog.com.

Her latest book from Dogwise is "Assessing Aggression Thresholds in Dogs —Using the Assess-A-Pet Protocol to Better Understand Aggression." Sue has been developing and refining assessment techniques for decades to help shelter workers and trainers determine the likelihood that a dog will engage in aggressive behaviors. This book includes Sue’s newest protocols based on the theory that sociability is the key predictor of a dog’s potential for aggression.

Sue’s newest DVD project is a giant, lifetime video collection of discrete behaviors serving as a catalog of body language—over three hours of an intensive study guide to dogs. The Ethogram of the Dog DVDs are available through Dogwise.com.

Sue is a hobby paleontologist, and spends as much free time as she can exploring the desert with her dogs looking for fossils and also pretty rocks. She loves all things Star Trek, is an avid tea drinker, and plays the fiddle, too.

Applied Animal Behaviorist

Kathy Sdao, MA

Kathy Sdao is a superstar in the animal behavior world, one of my personal heroes. She's been a full-time animal trainer for thirty-five years, first with marine mammals and now with dogs and their people. At the University of Hawaii, she received a master’s degree as part of a research team which trained dolphins to understand sign-language. She then worked for the United States Navy to train dolphins for open-ocean military tasks. Kathy also worked as a marine-mammal trainer at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma Washington. After leaving the zoo world, she co-created Tacoma’s first dog daycare.

Kathy launched Bright Spot Dog Training in 1998. Services include consulting with families about their challenging dogs and mentoring professional trainers who want to maximize the power of positive-reinforcement training. Kathy is proud to be an original faculty member for Karen Pryor’s ClickerExpos; she’s taught at thirty-nine of these popular conferences. Kathy has also lectured at venues across the United States, Canada and Europe, and in Australia, Israel, Japan and Mexico. In 2012, she published her first book, Plenty in Life Is Free: Reflections on Dogs, Training and Finding Grace.

Behavior and Training Consultant

Chirag Patel, BSc(Hons), CPBZC, DipCABT

Chirag is passionate about the application of ethical behavior change science to improve the life of animals living under human care by teach animals to be active participants in their own daily and veterinary care in a low stress manner. He is highly sought after for working with private clients, organizations as well as teaching workshops and presenting at conferences. Chirag was also an expert on BBC 1’s TV Series Nightmare Pets SOS and has gives TV interviews worldwide.

Chirag earned his BSc(Hons) in Veterinary Sciences from the Royal Veterinary College in London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Animal Behavior from the University of Lincoln, UK. He also holds an Advanced diploma in practical aspects of companion animal behavior and training from the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology. In 2005, Chirag completed an internship in dog behavior and training with a focus on aggressive behavior under the mentorship of Jean Donaldson at the San Francisco SPCA and developed his understanding and skills in puppy training under the mentorship of Ian Dunbar PhD, BVetMed, MRCVS. He is also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers UK (00923).  He has also been invited and accepted as a Certified Parrot Behavior Consultant (CPBC), with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC).

Dog Trainer, Author, Singer-Songwriter

Grisha Stewart MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP

I'm a collaborative dog trainer, author, international presenter, singer-songwriter, and keynote speaker of European ancestry (best guess based on DNA and some genealogy is Scotland, "England & Northwestern Europe," Wales, "Germanic Europe," Ireland, and Norway). I've been helping people and dogs professionally since 2003. My passion projects are grief tending, community singing, and woodturning.

I'm fascinated by animal behavior (including humans), somatic awareness, spirituality, psychology. My work is directed at wholehearted living for all beings, including dogs with a history of aggression, frustration, or fear as well as puppies and my other favorite species: humans.

My Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT 2.0 book and BAT 3.0) is used worldwide to help dogs gain confidence and social skills. Well over 200,000 people have learned about BAT so far.

Diane Redding and I co-host a podcast called The Lesson is Love.

As an outgoing introvert, I refresh my batteries by singing, expressing grief in community, and savoring life with my husband (Tom), Labrador (Joey), cat (Garbanzo aka "Adventure Kitty" and "Baby Panther"), and Little Brown Dog (Zuki). I identify as a queer (pansexual), neurodiverse, middle age, white, raised in poverty and now of middle class, and US citizen, spiritual non-Christian leaning toward neo-Druid (but raised in Christian culture). My pronouns are she/her. I am still wrestling with living on the stolen river watershed of the Siuslaw people, who are part of the CTCLUSI.

Just some of the amazing reviews for Part 1!

I had a tremendously enjoyable time watching (except for the empathy with unhappy dogs, of course) but so important to be able to identify such occasions and communication from dogs. I cannot wait for part 2 (and three????). Too many great things to add in one comment. This was everything I could have hoped for and more. The analysis of videos in slow motion, input from our panel and members, hearing from and seeing the art of Lili Chin...fantastic. Sadly we must wait until the Kindle version becomes available in Europe and U.S. (U.K. turns down U.S. accounts...). Thank you for creating a community of people staying in touch even when we are separated due to the pandemic. Not only did I learn, but I felt connected. So valuable!

Enjoyed hearing each panel member's take on what they saw as well as other insights. Love Lili's book to use as a beginners introduction to body language and Chirag's tip on having the learner spend a week watching ears, next week eyes, next week mouth, etc. The focus of the discussion was a little scattered at times. I wasn't clear on what the outcome was; to sell the book, to enhance learner's skill beyond drawings or photos, to use the book but remind that whole body, breed, and context is essential for interpretation. Maybe I was expecting a webinar-like presentation with beginning, middle, and end! Saying that, I do have ideas now how to utilize the book and real photos/videos in a lesson. The photo close up and extended view were brilliant. I would like to see more videos and really hit on the "in context". I am looking for ways to help create awareness and teach body language to novice puppy handlers that are raising puppies for a service dog organization.

I greatly appreciate *everyone's* teacher/learner approach and the ability to evaluate without declaring certainty. / Edited to add: We're about to re-watch. A number of observational skills picked up on the first viewing have become important parts of our interactions with, for example, potential fosters. We would have been aware of the issues before but not with such clarity-- which has us trusting our gut instincts more solidly. Really helpful!
