I never really had a name for the behavior of "tracking" but I've been trying to move with my dog and teach others to do the same. This video really made this concept clearer and much easier to explain to clients. I can't wait to get students dancing with their dogs in this manner.

The gift the Grisha brings to the Dog training world is more that her handling skills, patience and communication proficiency- although those are many and profound. It is the gift that she reminds one to be respectful, mindful and kind to oneself and the souls in our presence. She invites the learner to see the gratitude, beauty and balance of relationship. Giving and taking with our animals - so we can learn and grow together. She invites you to be a whole being not a perfect one and in that beauty and acceptance is found. She is a clear communicator and fun enlivening speaker and allows grace for the learner to expand. Again...thankful for her gift.

Apart from a very entertaining recording of a live presentation, the informative value in this course is, as always when Grisha does a presentation, higher than the title promises. Not only the dogs wellbeing is in the focus, but also the one of the owner/caring person /tracker, so both can profit from it. Especially for Diamond members its a great start into the understanding of a dogs emotional state, as there are lots of links to other courses of the academy to dive deeper into detail.Going to track my dogs now ;)

Dog Pros: Are You Teaching People How to Track Their Dogs?

Opening up the UK DOGx 2023 conference with this new presentation was so inspiring! And the good news is that you didn't miss out on it.

In this keynote talk, I explore a new and nuanced meaning of the word 'tracking' that I learned from Aaron Johnson and adapted to the dog world: instead of tracking prey or lost humans, we are "tracking" our dogs: paying attention and taking them into account over time.

Tracking is defined more fully in the presentation, but it's essentially empathetic attunement: carefully paying attention to the experience of whoever you are tracking, for their benefit and the benefit of the greater community.

Tracking is the missing link, a fundamental skill for families with dogs, and putting words to this skillset inspires us how to go about teaching it, instead of focusing on the power-over approach that is the traditional role of dog trainers.

If you've been finding your life and relationship with dogs subtly shifting as you learn and grow, this talk can help you put some verbiage to the change and inspire you to nourish the whole dog, secure attachment, and the systems in which they live. Recorded Live at the 2023 DogX Conference Hosted by PACT UK.

We invite you to watch the presentation along with the online Q&A we did afterwards!

This webinar and all of the other online dog classes in the school are included with a Diamond Membership All Access Pass. For one low price per month, you get all of our emotionally enriching dog courses!
  • Suitable for dog trainers, behaviorists, families with dogs, shelter workers, or anyone who wants to help dogs. Also suitable for animal trainers and behaviorists for any species.

  • Words have the power to create change; put words to fresh ways of conceiving life with dogs.

  • If you live in community with dogs, this talk is for you!

  • Taught in the style of a TED talk, filmed live at DOGx.

  • "Tracking" was derived from the tracking done for hunting, flipped around for Care, instead. Tracking has been repurposed to mean paying attention to the experience or life force of another being.

About the Instructor

Dog Trainer, Author, Singer-Songwriter

Grisha Stewart MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP

I'm a collaborative dog trainer, author, international presenter, singer-songwriter, and keynote speaker of European ancestry (best guess based on DNA and some genealogy is Scotland, "England & Northwestern Europe," Wales, "Germanic Europe," Ireland, and Norway). I've been helping people and dogs professionally since 2003. My passion projects are grief tending, community singing, and woodturning.

I'm fascinated by animal behavior (including humans), somatic awareness, spirituality, psychology. My work is directed at wholehearted living for all beings, including dogs with a history of aggression, frustration, or fear as well as puppies and my other favorite species: humans.

My Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT 2.0 book and BAT 3.0) is used worldwide to help dogs gain confidence and social skills. Well over 200,000 people have learned about BAT so far.

Diane Redding and I co-host a podcast called The Lesson is Love.

As an outgoing introvert, I refresh my batteries by singing, expressing grief in community, and savoring life with my husband (Tom), Labrador (Joey), cat (Garbanzo aka "Adventure Kitty" and "Baby Panther"), and Little Brown Dog (Zuki). I identify as a queer (pansexual), neurodiverse, middle age, white, raised in poverty and now of middle class, and US citizen, spiritual non-Christian leaning toward neo-Druid (but raised in Christian culture). My pronouns are she/her. I am still wrestling with living on the stolen river watershed of the Siuslaw people, who are part of the CTCLUSI.
